The Chief Justice of Cross River State, Justice Okoi Ikpi-Itam, has urged High Court Judges and Magistrates to always protect the Cross Rivers State Child Rights Law domesticated in 2009. The CJ gave the charge in Calabar while declaring open a five-day training workshop for Family Court Judges and Magistrates in the state. According to Ikpi-Itam, the law which was passed by the state House of Assembly in 2009 prescribed absolute protection of children from all forms of violence, abuse and maltreatment. In his words, “Children are vulnerable and must not be exploited, abused or maltreated. I therefore encourage you through your decisions in court to address these issues pertaining to the children and with a view to protect and promote the rights of the child.”
